Holy Week Begins with Vespers on March 13th in the early Evening.
Here, Jesus rides triumphantly into Jerusalem, seated atop a donkey. Jesus commands his Apostles to prepare the place where his final meal will be celebrated.
As was the practice, before the meal, hands and feet were washed. Jesus washes our feet, as He washed those of the Apostles on Holy Thursday so many years ago.
Then they sat down for supper. Jesus broke the bread and said: This is my Body. And, he took the cup and said, "This is my blood.... do this in remembrance of me."
We still do this today, at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Good Friday, is when Jesus died for us so that we may live.
He is given a huge oaken Cross to carry. Simon of Cyrene, a very strong man, was asked to help Jesus carry it, while His Mother accompanies Him.
Rough nails are pounded unmercifully through his hands and feet, and He is brutally nailed to the Cross, where He dies for us, so that we may have the opportunity to be healed and thus taken into Heaven when it is our time.
Joseph of Arimathea took the body of Jesus, and wrapping it in a clean linen cloth he laid it in his new tomb, which he had hewn out of rock. Then he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and departed. (Matthew 27:59-60)
When we reach Holy Saturday, Jesus is prepared for burial, and in the very morning (Easter), the tomb is found empty. He is Risen. Alleluja!
