Personal Challenges

Franciscan Sisters and Brothers,

I haven't written any new reflections lately due to laziness, lack of motivation, etc. Given my health situation, my spiritual life and the idea that I may have a teaching moment here, I would like to try again, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

The situation is this. Two weeks ago, I quite suddenly realized there was something wrong with me. I had a growth on the left of my head that got bigger and bigger, and quite painful, and I really wanted the doctor to investigate what was wrong. Through the VA (I am an Army Veteran), it was determined that I had a Sarcoma (type of soft-tissue cancer). There was evidence that this had spread to Lymph nodes on the left of my neck. The diagnosis was later revised: After a biopsy, it was determined I have "B-Cell Lymphoma."

Through a PET scan to research that, it was also noted that the upper lobe of my left lung was involved. A CAT scan is to follow soon to determine is this is an entirely separate issue or part of the Sarcoma. And then, the docs may be able to find a treatment of some sort, either radiation, chemotherapy or nothing.

I see a teaching moment in all this, which I would like to share in upcoming reflections. Some people would go off the deep end, but that is not my style. I am usually upbeat no matter what the challenge.

I'll keep you posted and in the meantime, please say a prayer for me.
