Lent 2020

LENT 2020

Ash Wednesday • February 26

In the Gospel of Ash Wednesday, we are reminded that Lent is a time of humble giving. Matthew 6:3 tells us, "when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" (RSV), and in v. 19-21, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

St. Francis's lifestyle teaches us something about Humility. For him that was a big change, after having renounced a lavish lifestyle before his conversion. We're also reminded that the rich will have a tough time fitting through the eye of the needle (see Mt. 19:24).

In today's world the devil severely tempts us to live a life of luxury, in any manner possible, especially through theft, dishonesty, etc. Our Lord, however, teaches us quite the opposite. He tells us, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have Treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." (Mt. 19:21) That's exactly what St. Francis teaches us, as his devoted followers.
